Cold Chisels
- Cold chisels come in a variety of styles, including flat (the most widely used), cape, diamond-point and round-nose.
- A cold chisel is made of tempered steel and should be used only for cutting and chipping cold metal (unhardened steel, cast and wrought iron, aluminum, brass and copper), never masonry.
- Cold chisels are used to remove waste metal when a very smooth finish is not required or when the work cannot be done easily with other tools, such as a hacksaw, file, bench shears or other power tools.
- They originated when blacksmiths cut metal while it was cold. Their other tools were used to cut hot metal. The cutting edge has greater strength but less sharpness.
